Global foreign exchange markets witnessed a sharp change in momentum during the last week. USDINR corrected from 96.27 to sharp 95.25 after RBI intervention and profit booking, while EUR, GBP and JPY strengthened against the US dollar as markets reassessed global monetary policy expectations. Although implied volatility in USDINR remained stable around 5.30%, geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East, elevated global interest rates and diverging central bank policies continue to dominate currency pricing.

USDINR

USDINR retreated from the historic high of 96.2750 to close at 95.40, reflecting RBI intervention and profit booking after an extended rally. Despite the correction, implied volatility remains steady at 5.30%, suggesting the market expects orderly rather than disorderly movement. Elevated crude oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty, and strong US yields continue to pose upside risks for USDINR. Importers should continue layered hedging, while exporters can selectively monetize higher USD realizations using structured option strategies.

Weekly Performance:  OHLC: 96.14 / 96.2750 / 95.25 / 95.40

Technical Analysis

Technical Indicators

Key Levels

USDINR formed a bearish engulfing / reversal candle after recording a high at 96.2750.

Indicating aggressive profit booking near resistance.

RSI has retreated from overbought territory.

MACD remains positive but momentum is slowing.

Price remains above the 20-week EMA, indicating the primary trend is still bullish.

Support - 95.20 > 94.80 > 94.20

Resistance -95.80 > 96.30 > 96.80

Implied volatility remains stable, suggesting orderly price discovery rather than panic.

Treasury View: The correction should currently be viewed as profit booking rather than a trend reversal.

US Dollar

The US Dollar remains fundamentally supported by elevated interest rates and resilient economic data. The USD IRS curve continues to trade above 4.30% across the term structure, indicating markets still expect policy rates to remain restrictive. However, the sharp decline in USDJPY and recovery in EURUSD suggest that part of the long USD positioning is being unwound.

Market Bias: Neutral to Moderately Bullish.

EUR/USD

EUR/USD strengthened to 1.1522, supported by improving Eurozone sentiment and a higher EUR IRS curve (2.89%–3.08%), indicating expectations of relatively tighter financial conditions. Nevertheless, Europe's exposure to energy prices and geopolitical risks continues to cap medium-term upside. Treasury teams with EUR exposure should remain vigilant around ECB policy guidance and energy market developments.

Weekly OHLC: 1.1379 / 1.1547 / 1.1353 / 1.1522

Fundamental Drivers

Technical View

Higher EUR IRS rates together with improving Eurozone confidence have supported the Euro despite lingering geopolitical concerns.

  • Bullish breakout

  • Higher highs and higher lows

  • RSI above 60

  • MACD positive crossover

Bias: Bullish above 1.1450

GBP/USD

GBP/USD closed at 1.3480, extending its positive momentum as higher UK interest rates and a steep GBP IRS curve (4.35%–4.63%) continued to attract carry flows. Sterling remains one of the stronger G10 currencies, although persistent inflation and slowing domestic growth could increase volatility around Bank of England policy expectations.

Weekly OHLC: 1.3335 / 1.3495 / 1.3274 / 1.3480

Technical Structure

Key Levels

Bullish continuation pattern

Resistance: 1.3550 --- Support: 1.3400

Bias: Bullish

USD/JPY

The Japanese yen was the strongest major currency during the week, with USD/JPY falling 3.83%, reflecting a combination of safe-haven demand and expectations of further Bank of Japan policy normalization. Rising JPY IRS rates reinforce expectations of gradually higher domestic yields. While long-term yield differentials still favor the US dollar, the sharp correction demonstrates that USD/JPY remains highly sensitive to policy shifts and geopolitical developments.

Weekly OHLC: 163.76 / 163.95 / 157.25 / 157.40

Decline indicates

Fundamental

  • BOJ normalization expectations

  • Carry trade unwinding

  • Increased safe-haven demand

Despite the correction, yield differentials continue to favour the dollar over the medium term.

Bias: Volatile with downside correction

Treasury Strategy

Importers

  • Hedge based on business cash-flow certainty rather than short-term market views.

  • Maintain layered hedge ratios of 60–80% for near-term exposures.

  • Consider call options or participating forwards where flexibility is required.

Exporters

  • Utilize higher USD realization levels to lock in margins.

  • Combine forwards with zero-cost collar or participating option structures to preserve upside while protecting downside.

CFOs & Treasury Teams

  • Review hedge effectiveness regularly as funding costs remain elevated.

  • Integrate FX, interest-rate, and commodity risks into a unified treasury framework.

  • Monitor central bank communication and geopolitical developments, as they may trigger sharp shifts in market sentiment.
